Dakota & Dylan's Story, Wollar, New South Wales

Little Dakota was born in September 2007 and was a mere seven days old and not long home from hospital before a little spot found on her face turned the familys world upside down.

Dakotas three year old brother Dylan had gone to bed with what appeared to be a cold and parents Lindy and Rob had settled in with baby Dakota. At 6.30am Lindy woke to feed her newborn daughter and noticed a small purple spot between her chin and lips. When they began to undress Dakota for changing their worst fears were confirmed upon seeing purple spots all over her tiny body.

The family lives in an isolated area at Wollar in the west of New South Wales and on arrival at Mudgee hospital Dakota was immediately intubated and the Telstra Child Flight chopper was called after a doctor confirmed Meningococcal disease.

Whilst the Telstra Child Flight chopper was enroute to Mudgee to retrieve Dakota, Lindy and Rob received a call to say that Dylan had awoken with a rash all over his body.

Now Dakotas older brother was being rushed to the hospital and was also requiring the services of the Telstra Child Flight chopper.

The Telstra Child Flight crew was notified of the second patient with suspected Meningococcal disease to come and had to send back for an additional team. Both brother and sister were transported to Randwick Childrens hospital to undergo immediate treatment for this horror illness.

The siblings spent the following two weeks in the care of the hospital and their relieved parents are now proud to report that both children are doing extremely well and in March 2008 Dakota at 6 months old is doing all the normal things for a child that age as is her older brother Dylan. Lindy and Rob know how blessed they are to have their children not only survive Meningococcal disease but to come through with no obvious ill effects.
